Rocket is a fast grower, as the name implies. It provides salad greens that can be continuously picked from the garden. In many zones it grows well over an extended season from Spring to late Autumn (Fall). In hotter areas, avoid planting in mid- Summer as it will quickly go to flower. Stagger the plantings to extend the harvest period. It provides a healthy addition to salads, stir-fries and sandwiches. It has a zest and tangy flavor similar to mustard. It is best picked and used straight from the garden.
Rocket prefers a rich, well-drained soil with plenty of compost dug well in. It responds well to liquid fertiliser applications. It grows well in most soil types provided it has half to full sun, and plenty of water. Do not allow the plants to dry out, or to get growth checks, to ensure the leaves are tender. Plant seed in trays in the winter/early months. Transplant seedlings or directly sow the seeds after the last frosts. Plants will go to flower rapidly in hot dry weather.
Seed Depth: Plant seeds about 5-8 mm (1/4 inch) deep. Plant in rows about 30 cm (1 foot) apart. Plant along the bed margins for continuous harvest like a herb. Seeds germinate quickly, in just a few days.
Space between plants: Thin to 15-25 cm (9-12 inches) apart once the seeds have germinated and grown a little.
Harvest Time: Harvest after 3-4 weeks for a 7-8 week growth interval. Sow seeds in batches every 1-2 weeks for a continuous long harvest.
