Mesclun, literally meaning "mixture", is not a single species of plant. Instead, it is a blend of small or young leaves plants, harvested young and chosen to complement each other. Originating in France, the traditional mesclun mix consisted of equal parts chervil, arugula, endive and lettuce. However, there are many and varied mixes available and you can make your own combination. Some species to include are: arugula, cress, chicory, tatsoi, mizuna, lettuce, endive, mustard, parsley, fennel, mache, radicchio and other greens. Remember that the mix is designed to be harvested very early to provide greens for salads and as a side serve vegetable or in stir fry dishes. Mesclun has a huge range of uses as a leafy green. It is best used immediately after picking as it does not store well
Mesclun is a cool season crop. Grow in spring through early summer. Plant again in early autumn (fall) for an early winter crop before the first frosts. Mesclum mixtures do best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil that has a high organic matter content. Most leafy greens grow best in full sun, though excessive heat can cause plants to bolt to seed, or leaves to wilt. For an early start, seeds can be started in seed trays 4 weeks before the last frost date and transplanted outdoors in mid to late spring. When growing in summer, choose a shaded location. Encourage rapid and consistent growth of tender and tasty leaves by planting in areas with rich, fertile soil and water regularly. organic compost matter. When direct seeding, thin the plants to 10-20 cm (6-12 inches) to avoid over-cropping. The plants removed can be you first pickings. Plant seed in batches to ensure a steady supply over summer. Lack of moisture, stress, and high temperatures encourage bolting. Greens typically have shallow root systems, so use mulch to control weeds and retain moisture.
Seed Depth: Plant seed in seed trays, or randomly scatter seeds in an area of the garden at a depth of about 8-24 cm (1/2 to 1 inches deep). Most plants are frost tender.
Space between plants: Space plants about about 50-100 cm (2-4 inches) apart. Space rows 50-80 cm (10-20 inches) apart
Harvest Time: Harvest in about 2-6 weeks, but leaves can be picked continuously.
