Planting and Growing Guide for Long Yam (Dioscorea transversa)
Description
The Long Yam is an Australian Native species. It is a climbing vine with large green heart shaped leaves. It has a distinctive seed pod. The whitish-brown tuber or yam is located well below ground level. It can be eaten raw or roasted. The yams taste like potato. Grows in warmer climates. The vines need support to grow.
Planting Guide
Seed Depth:
Grow from tuber cuttings planted initially in pots until the roots are established.
Plant out in warm weather
Space between plants:
Space plants about 40-50 cm (18-24 inches) apart.
Harvest Time:
Harvest in about 6-12 months
Hints:
Grows well in full sun. Partial shade may prevent bolting in hot weather.
Does best in rich, well-drained soils with a covering of mulch to inhibit weeds and to keep the soil moist. A soft, well composted soil is better than pure and or heavy clay soils
Water regularly and evenly, especially in summer
Need support for the vine to grow
