Planting and Growing Guide for French tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus)

Description

French tarragon a hardy perennial herb that is native of southern Europe. It is very easy to grow, but it is frost tender and rarely sets seed. It usually grown from cuttings (Use a hormone powder to stimulate root growth) . Grow French tarragon from French variety seed as an annual in cooler area if you can source good quality seed. The Russian tarragon should be avoided, as it has poor flavor. French tarragon grows very well in pots and so keep a potted plant in a sheltered spot away from the frost to use as a source for cuttings. French tarragon grows best in full sun in an area protected from wind. It can be grown in part-shade, but it will grow slower. Water well and frequently in hot dry weather, but only to moisten the soil. Cover the plants in autumn with a thick layer of mulch or straw to allow them to survive the winter frosts.

.French tarragon plants grow to a height of 60-90 cm (24-36 inches) inches and spread to about half this height and so they need plenty of space in the herb garden. Use French tarragon as a herb when cooking poultry, fish, pork, chicken and beef. It is ideal as a garnish for most cooked vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and parsnips. French tarragon is also used to make sauces and to make herb butters, vinegars and oils. It is also widely used in soups, braised meat dishes, pizzas and stir-fries. It is also a wonderful addition as a garnish to salads and pasta dishes.

Seed Depth: Plant seeds 5 mm (1/4 inch) deep in seed trays for an early start, or directly into the garden. It can also be grown from cuttings or by splitting the roots in Spring

Space between plants: Space plants about about 50 cm (24 inches) apart. Space rows 60-90 cm (24 to 36 inches) apart

Harvest Time: Harvest in 30-40 days, by continually picking the young leaves when they are ender and packed with flavor
