Planting and Growing Guide for Climbing Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris, Phaseolus coccineus)
Description
Climbing beans require support which can take many forms: trellis, stakes, string strung between garden stakes, fences and even up trees or branches cut from trees and shrubs.
Beans grow best in relatively rich soil soil that are well-drained but with lots organic matter to retain moisture and feed the growing plants.
Planting Guide
Seed Depth:
Sow seed directly in the garden at a depth about 1 cm (1/2 inch), about 3 times the diameter of the seed.
Space between plants:
15-20 cm apart apart (9 inches) apart
Harvest Time:
First harvest in 9-11 weeks, but then, pick continuously
Hints:
Keep well watered and feed regularly
Pick regularly to encourage new flowers
Protect from snails and slugs
There are many varieties to choose from that have various tastes and textures.
Use young raw beans in salads. Blanch and cool before freezing.
