Planting and Growing Guide for Growing Aubergine - Eggplant (Solanum sp.)
Description
Aubergine, also known as Eggplant is a large plant that has attractive purple flowers that develop into large globulous egg-shape fruits. There are many varieties with different various colours and fruit of various sizes. The varieties available range from large and purple fruits to smaller white and red varieties. Beware as the stems have spikes and it pays to use glove which picking the fruit. Has many uses in a wide variety of dishes.
Planting Guide
Seed Depth:
2-4 cm (0.5 - 0.75 inches) deep (about 3 times the diameter of the seed).
Space between plants:
60 - 70 cm apart (2 feet) apart
Harvest Time:
12-15 weeks from seed
Hints:
Grow in heated greenhouses in cold climates
Protect from excess heat in hotter climates
Cut and use the same day if possible
Needs a long season for the fruits to mature, so plant wisely depending on the locality
Frost tender and so plant out after lost frost
Grow in seed trays in warm protected areas; plant out after 4-6 weeks
Remove fruit with a sharp knife
Mulch well around the plants, water frequently and use stakes to support the plants
